Dr. Hartle received his MD at the University of Heidelberg in 1982, his Dr. Med., from the University of Heidelberg in 1985, and his Dr. Med. Habil. from the University of Munich, Institute of Physiological Chemistry' in 1990. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. W. Wickner, University of California at Los Angeles in 1989-1990. He was a group leader, Institute of Physiological Chemistry, University of Munich (1987-1991) and an Associate Member and Member (with tenure), Program in Cellular Biochemistry & Biophysics, Sloan-Kettering Institute, New York (1991-1997) From 1994-97 he was an Associate Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Dr Hartl has received a number of honours and awards, including: the Lipmann Award, American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1997), Wilhelm Vaillant Research Prize (2000), Feldberg Prize (2003), Gairdner Foundation International Award (2004), Ernst Jung-Prize for Medicine (2005), Koerber European Science Award (2006), Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences (2007) and the Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award (2008) He is a Foreign Member of the Academy of Science of Nordrhein-Westfalen (1997) and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000).
